Sri Lanka Emergency Appeal

srilanka-11The civil war in Sri Lanka may have come to an end but for many civilians displaced by the war, the suffering continues. Thousands of civilians have been displaced, injured and subjected to suspected war crimes while as many as 15,000 people have been killed in recent months. The United Nations estimates that over 250,000 people have been displaced by the violence and are now accommodated in welfare camps. Here sanitation is poor and there are severe shortages of food, water and shelter. Most have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods and are in desperate need of aid.

In response to this urgent need, UnitingWorld, with our trusted partners in Sri Lanka, have launched an emergency appeal. We have already sent initial funds to commence desperately needed emergency relief. However there is still much that needs to be done to alleviate the suffering of displaced civilians.

Funds raised will be used to provide people in war ravaged areas with essential food and equipment packs as well as pastoral support and medical supplies. We are also seeking to establish emergency accommodation to provide a day care service, meals, counselling and equipment to displaced communities.
