Sudan Village Water Supply and Education

For the people of the Nachipo villages water shortage has long been a burden on everyday life. Before the inception of this project women and children were forced to walk more than 5 kilometres to fetch water.

This left little time for education and before this project almost every adult was illiterate and no child attended school. The Toposa communities in Nachipo had no schools or pre-schools in their local area.

UnitingWorld committed to the construction of several deep bore hole and a water capturing system as well as to establishing a well resourced pre-school for the community. In 2007/08 UnitingWorld made it possible for four boreholes to be drilled to bring water to these drought stricken communities. A preschool has also been established which now enrols 150 children up to 12 years of age. The project will continue to expand to drill a further six boreholes as well as providing education on hygiene and health to the community. The preschool will also be provided with teaching and learning material and an Administration block for the teachers.

The project is supervised by Gladys Mananyu, Project Officer of the National Council of Churches, Sudan.
