Ambon
YAP’s work is coordinated in Ambon City, although activity take place anywhere from the city to the outer islands 300 kms away.
The major conflict in this area is between Christian and Muslim communities. Each workshop includes a mix of members from both faiths and are organized to enable each faith to make their regular religious observances. Progress has been made and at present there is a measure of peace. However a small incident can easily erupt into major conflict. Some groups in society benefit in times of conflict and have been known to indirectly, yet deliberately, disturb the peace.
The coordinators are Helena Rijoly and Kiki Zamal. In some places there are excellent relationships between Christian and Muslim faiths. Ichon hated the Christians for blowing off his brother’s leg. He asked recently “What will we do if a clash happens while we are at the YAP office? A YAP Muslim replied, “The YAP Christians will protect us”.
